Onam is celebrated at the beginning of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham.) In 2014, the most important day of Onam (Thiru Onam known as) is the September 7 rituals begin about 10 days before Thiru Onam in Atham.

Where Onam celebrated?
Onam is celebrated in the state of Kerala in South India. It is the biggest festival of the year. The most spectacular celebrations are held in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Kottayam.
Vamanamoorthy in Thrikkakara Temple (Thrikkakara temple known as), near Ernakulam Kochi is located about 15 km north-east, is particularly associated with the festival of Onam. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vamana, the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Legend has it that Thrikkakara was the home of King Mahabali good demon, the popular and was generous. What rituals performed?
In Atham (10 days before Onam), people start the day with an early bath, perform prayer and begin to create their floral decoration on the ground in front of their homes. Floral decoration (pookalams) continue for 10 days until the guide and Onam pookalam competitions of various organizations.
In the Thrikkakara temple, the festivities begin with a ceremony Atham special lifting and continued for 10 days with cultural shows, music and dance.
